Next, layer in permissions and data filters – for example, ensure the AI can’t tap into sensitive customer data unless certain conditions are met, and log every access for accountability. Consider developing a hybrid dataset that combines your proprietary data with curated external knowledge, then fine-tune or train smaller models on it; this can dramatically improve relevance and reduce errors for your specific use cases.

Many forward-leaning teams are also experimenting with an ensemble approach: using a general AI for easy questions, but routing tougher, domain-specific queries to a specialized model or rule-based system that’s been proven in-house.

Crucially, don’t chase “AI magic” – insist on measurable ROI at each step. If you’re worried about pouring money into another pilot that fizzles, focus on one or two high-impact workflows where AI can save time or reduce manual effort in a visible way.
